Playing Hard

Kai's favorite "toy" is his suction ballard.  He will yank pretty hard on it, pulling it in every direction.  It is amazing that he hasn't decannulated (pulled the trach out) himself or disconnected his circuit more often.  Well, all that pulling finally took its toll on his trach, and it broke.  Yep, the trach broke.  Crazy.  Luckily, it broke while the night nurse was holding him, and training another nurse--so the new nurse came and got us.  We were able to get the new one in with no problem.

This is one reason it is always important to have a spare trach on hand.  You never know what might happen!

How the trach is supposed to be

Broken: the part that holds the trach to his ties around his neck completely slides out from the trach itself, so it pops right out of his trachea.

 Completely off
